Frequently Asked Questions

Are your services in person or virtual?

We offer both, but most of our sessions are online through Zoom (secure video), as folks prefer not to battle traffic and weather.

If online, we can work together wherever you are in New York. We’ve even worked with clients in Rouses Point, officially the northernmost city in the state!

If you’d like to come for an in-person session, here is the address:

3 Columbus Circle
New York, New York 10019

Why should I choose Momentum Psychotherapy?

Finding the right therapist is hard. So much has to come together to land the right match.

We are a group of highly trained, passionate, and vetted therapists with training and experience in potent, proven therapies. This is the “recipe” for therapy that moves you. The “secret sauce” of therapy that works is equal parts of a great, relatable, committed therapist AND the psychotherapy intervention itself. Momentum has it all!

At Momentum, you can expect a therapist who:

(1) has deep knowledge and experience in the specific interventions proven effective for your particular challenge(s)
(2) is engaged, active, and enthusiastic about their work with you
(3) is totally invested in your progress
(4) will do what it takes to help you meet your goals. Our therapists constantly evaluate and tweak the program to keep the treatment moving. There is no such thing as stagnation at Momentum Psychotherapy!

Will I improve in therapy? How effective are your therapists?

Data over the last decade substantiates our therapy as “highly effective.”

In fact, we were ranked first in a pool of 98 outpatient behavioral health centers participating in the country’s largest feedback-informed collaboration of mental health providers.

How long will I be in therapy?

The timeframe for treatment depends on the conditions or issues that are the focus of your treatment. Some conditions, like bulimia nervosa, for example, are treated in a very defined, short-term way: 20 sessions over 20 weeks. Other challenges are more variable and depend on the specific therapy intervention chosen.

What we can say with certainty, however, is that Momentum therapists do not see therapy as a lifelong commitment. We are wholly focused on effecting prompt change in treatment.

We know that people who experience change early on in treatment (the first 4-8 weeks) fare much better overall. We see the link between early change and positive short- and long-term outcomes in a wide range of mental health diagnoses, including treatment for common conditions like depression and anxiety.

Who is your perfect client?

The perfect client is completely, wholly imperfect!

We encourage you to join us fully with all your “imperfections,” worries, fears, hang-ups, and obstacles in the open to share. That way, we can dig our teeth into them to help you process, reflect, challenge, and evolve.

So, the “perfect “client is someone who will come as they are and is willing to engage in the process of growth.

Do you work with people from diverse backgrounds?

Momentum Psychotherapy is an inclusive and affirming environment where all are encouraged and valued. We enthusiastically serve adults of all genders, races, sexual orientations, neurodivergences, sizes, and abilities.

We battle harmful attitudes and messages that promote societal ideals and biases that harm us all, and we always approach therapy with compassion, acceptance, and a non-judgmental stance with respect for individual choice and self-determination.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity to connect with your therapist and share your story.

It’s also a chance to begin mapping out what you hope to get from therapy. If you can’t name it, you can’t achieve it! The more we can clarify your wants and needs from the process, the more successful we will be together.

What is therapy like with you?
Sessions are typically very active and focused on your goals with a clear structure.
How do you work with clients?

Momentum Psychotherapy has an eight-pronged approach to therapy:

Engage: No therapy will move if there is no connection between the client and the therapist. The first few sessions are about building this partnership. Safety, openness, understanding, and trust are central.

Motivate/Inspire: Let’s envision what you want from your life and identify why you’ll work hard to move forward. We want you chomping at the bit to get going!

Set Goals and Expectations: How can you go after what you want if you don’t see it clearly? We want to define what you want from the start.

Build on Strengths and Work through Challenges: We will focus on your strengths and build on them. When we identify challenges, we will offer strategies to lift you up.

Monitor: Let’s keep our wits about us. How are we doing? How are you feeling about the work? Where are you in the process? And don’t worry: Effective assessment of the process will never feel like pressure. This is a method of inspiring – of supporting growth and building a sense of empowerment. After all, when you’re moving, it’s nice to notice (see “Celebrate” below).

Remain Focused: We want to get the most out of our time together. This means that we notice if/when we’re getting off track. It’s easy to get distracted. Sometimes, we consciously or unconsciously avoid the hard stuff. We will remain vigilant so we can get back to business.

Celebrate: It’s so important to highlight progress and success. When we move, we need to notice… and encourage. Think about how important reinforcement is in any kind of change. This attention and appreciation contribute to building mastery and confidence.

Move On: We’re not a “grab and hold” practice. We are here to help you believe in yourself and your capacity to live fully with independence and resolve. We are intentional about discouraging dependence on therapy. Your therapist can be your compass to give you direction until you’ve fully learned your way.

How much does therapy cost?

Individual therapy is billed at $290 for a 50-minute session.

Couples work, family sessions, and parent coaching sessions are billed at $350 for 60 minutes.

Individual therapy sessions that require an hour or more are billed at $335 and then $84 per additional 15-minute interval.

Do you take insurance?

Momentum Psychotherapy is self-pay; we’re not contracted with any insurance companies.

If you have out-of-network insurance benefits, we can provide a “Superbill” after each session. It’s a receipt containing all the necessary information to submit for out-of-network benefits (e.g., session date, diagnosis, therapist license, tax ID, etc.).

How do I pay?
Payment is streamlined by maintaining a credit card on file that is automatically charged after each session.
What is my first step?

Call us! You will speak directly with a therapist who will want to hear about your concerns and reasons for seeking therapy.

You’ll hear a bit about how we work and whether we can be helpful to you. We’ll schedule your first session if we seem like a good fit.

If we establish on this call that we’re not the right fit, we’ll let you know and provide guidance for an alternative.

What is the free initial phone consultation like?

This first call is the first step! And there is nothing to lose – except, perhaps, 15-20 minutes. But you will likely get off the call with more insight than when you started, so it may be worth the risk!

On the call, a skilled therapist will discuss your concerns and reasons for seeking therapy. The therapist will know what to ask to establish if one of our providers will be your ideal match. You’ll learn a bit about how we can help during this call.

We can schedule an initial appointment immediately if you feel confident and ready.
